Smith struck by vehicle during race
was struck by a car during a 10 kilometre race in Bangor, Northern Ireland.
Smith was running with three other athletes when an elderly woman bolted out of a side street about eight kilometres into the race. The other runners were able to evade the vehicle, but Smith was not so fortunate.
As the Bermudian tried to push himself out of the way he received a blow to his left knee and also damaged his right ankle sustaining bruises and minor road rash.
The woman was stopped by a police officer while attempting to leave the scene, but Smith elected not to press charges and went on to finish the race in a time of just over 32 minutes.
"I guess you could say I went out with a bang,'' joked Smith, speaking from a hotel room in England yesterday as he awaited his return to Bermuda, having had his scheduled flight cancelled due to the threat of Hurricane Marilyn. "I guess it's really time for me to get out of this country.'' Smith has spent several weeks in England for a period of intense training, with an eye toward participation in the next Commonwealth Games or possibly next year's Olympic Games in Atlanta.
