new programme would begin in August for fresh recruits.

Currently the course tends to be "mechanistic'', but basic psychology, understanding of the needs of the people and the role of the modern Police officer will be included.

An analysis of problem solving and a knowledge of Government will also be included and greater use will be made of outside speakers. Police Reserve training will also be upgraded.

Visits will take place to colleges in Canada and Britain to up-grade course content relevant to the Bermuda Police Service, and officers of Inspector level who show potential will work abroad for a set period.

Mr. Coxall believes there should be five levels of training within an officer's career in the force.

However, he said: "It is possible that uniformed officers could complete their Policing career without any additional training beyond the initial course if they chose not to opt for a specialist post. That is not a viable option.''
