Senior officers get axe
with the most radical move being the axing of two Assistant Commissioner posts.
Superintendent posts will also be reduced from four to three and the three divisions within Bermuda controlled by a Superintendent in Hamilton and Chief Inspectors in the East and West.
Mr. Coxall told his colleagues of the move yesterday and said they acted "quite properly''. He declined to say who would be affected.
There is also "tremendous scope'' to improve efficiency through greater investment in new technology and Mr. Coxall believes as much as $1.5m is needed over the next three years to bring computers into line with other Police organisations.
Much work also needs to be carried out on Police buildings and the annual maintenance budget should be doubled.
A commitment has been given by the Government to expand the "wholly inadequate'' Somerset Police station as well as the refurbishment of the Hamilton station and the headquarters at Prospect which is "suffering long-term neglect''.
"In its present state the accommodation is so below a reasonable standard that there is a direct and adverse correlation with the efficiency, Policing standards and public perception of the worth of the Service,'' said Mr.
Coxall.
OLD LOOK -- The old structure of the Bermuda Police Service. Described as top heavy, it will be changed with the loss of two Assistant Commissioners and one Superintendent.
