Talks underway as Sun reporters told to take photographs as well

Bermuda Sun reporters are having to double up as the bi-weekly paper manages without a full-time photographer.

It is understood some journalists at the publication are upset at having to take their own photographs and are currently negotiating with management for remuneration for the extra duties.

Reporters are currently paid a rate for each photo they take, depending on its position in the edition.

The paper recently introduced a second weekly edition and the extra work involved in that is also expected to be raised in a meeting with bosses.

Bermuda Sun editor Tom Vesey said it was not in their best interests to discuss the paper's business with The Royal Gazette , who "seemed to like having a campaign against us''.

Sun reporter Ayo Johnson said there was no full-time photographer but said all the staff were pulling together to make the newspaper a success.

"Personally I love taking pictures. I have no problem with it,'' he said.

"There is no discord about it. We are trying to work out a system that would be acceptable to everybody.'' He said the staff were currently trying to find a workable method and were primarily concerned with the logistics involved in taking pictures.

"I can't speak for everybody involved but there is a spirit of cooperation and tolerance,'' he said.

Mr. Johnson added management had invested in good equipment and taking pictures could only enhance their career prospects.
