Improve road safety at Blue Hole Hill urges NLP
tourists travelling from St. George's, according to the National Liberal Party.
The NLP is calling on the Government to remedy traffic problems at Blue Hole Hill which put residents and visitors at risk.
And it wants to see more sidewalks, a new bus lay-by and crosswalks to cut down on the dangers posed to pedestrians and motorists.
"Bermudians can feel very proud of this gateway as it is generally well kept with clean streets, lots of greenery and a variety of small businesses,'' said NLP chairman Mr. Gilbert Darrell.
"However, there is a major problem which the Government is overdue in addressing.
"The lack of sidewalks, together with some that are unfinished, cause traffic hazards for residents and visitors alike. These dangers apply to pedestrians, cyclists and motorists.'' Mr. Darrell said 12 years ago the Planning Department published a plan for the area following a survey of tourists and residents. He said the majority agreed that more sidewalks were needed.
"The section of road on Wilkinson Avenue, between the Crystal Caves and the Blue Hole Hill intersection is the worst area,'' said Mr. Darrell.
"There is no bus lay-by on the narrow road and, combined with the fact that there are no sidewalks, those walking on the streets are in a potentially dangerous situation.'' He added: "Under normal traffic conditions the situation can be chaotic. Add to this the extra traffic flow when there is a major game at Bailey's Bay and the situation deteriorates even further.'' The NLP wants to see a sidewalk stretching from the Swizzle Inn to the start of the Causeway, a sidewalk and bus lay-by on Wilkinson Avenue and a continuous sidewalk along North Shore Road from Blue Hole Hill to the entrance to Duck's Puddle.
"The NLP feels that these will mean safer road conditions for Grotto Bay Hotel guests and other pedestrians who are presently forced to walk in the streets to get to their desired destination,'' said Mr. Darrell.
