Clamens' Carnegie Hall debut called `wonderful'
ERROR RG P4 19.3.1998 A story in yesterday's paper stated that a special concert salute to Louise Jackson and Ruth Thomas at the Bermuda National Gallery will be held on Sunday, March 21 at 4 p.m., it should have read Saturday, March 21.
Describing soprano Marcelle Clamens' Carnegie Hall debut as a "triumph'' and an event which should make every Bermudian "very proud'', local businessman Clive Dakin says her performance convinced him that she deserves far more support from the community.
Ms Clamens who was one of the top winners in last year's Ibla Grand Prize in Italy, participated in a celebratory concert at the famous New York venue on March 1 during which she sang two operatic arias and a gospel song.
"I attended her concert in the Kurt Weill Recital Room at the Hall and she was quite wonderful. I wished she could have been on stage longer, but she certainly had a great reception. The house was packed -- even though the Vienna Philharmonic was in town! I congratulated her after the show and, yes, she was very surprised to see a `fan' from Bermuda!'' Mr. Dakin, who runs a management company, says he has a great love of classical music. "Besides having a glorious voice, Marcelle has a very good stage presence. I believe she has an immense talent which seems to have been underestimated in Bermuda. She deserves far greater support so that she can pursue her career. She must not be allowed to wither on the vine. She has started her professional career rather late and she must get more exposure in the US and Europe. I hope that as many Bermudians as possible will go to her big concert at Carnegie Hall in June.'' On that occasion, Marcelle Clamens she will appear in IBLA's 25th annual New York Debut and Distinguished Artists Award Concert on June 14.
In the meantime, local audiences can catch up with her, and some of her fellow finalists on Sunday, March 21, at 4 p.m. at the Bermuda National Gallery. She will be joined by mezzo soprano Linda Adams, and sopranos Christina Andreou and Sebroneete Barnes in a special concert salute to Louise Jackson and Ruth Thomas who will be receiving this year's Annual Life Achievement Awards.
