Family duo hail windy conditions
lead after the second day of the Lobster Pot Pro-Am team tournament at Port Royal yesterday.
Professional Richard Tinworth, 29, and his father Murray Tinworth, 54, were in fine form, as the foursome from Kent, England, fired a net 129.
Hever had started the day in equal seventh place, six shots adrift of leaders Salem Country Club I.
But Salem lost ground rapidly, shooting a 146 to follow their 134 in the hailstorms of the opening day which at times turned the greens white.
Strong winds meant conditions remained testing for the players yesterday, but for the Hever team, who fared 11 shots better than Monday, it was home from home.
Murray Tinworth said: "We're used to playing in the wind in England, so the wind shots were no problem. We really gelled together as a team and we didn't drop a shot.'' Richard Tinworth said the extreme conditions on Monday had been a shock to his team.
"We got a bit demoralised, to be honest, having come 3,500 miles expecting good weather and then we got hailstorms.'' The club professional had practised at Mid Ocean and Castle Harbour before the start of the tournament and felt he was finally coming to terms with putting conditions.
"I've been playing pretty well and I've had a couple of 68s since I've been here. I'm getting used to the grainier greens here now.'' Avila Golf Club, from Tampa, Florida, led by professional Bob Cornett, moved up to equal second, five shots behind Hever, shooting a 135 to follow their first-day 139.
Also on a two-day total of 274 are Tallwood Country Club. Reigning champions Rolling Road with professional Billy Bassler are 10 shots off the lead.
