Eighteen-year-old Javon O'Neil Smith, of Mullet Bay Road, pleaded guilty in Magistrates' Court to shoplifting.
Crown counsel Graveney Bannister told the court that at 7.45 p.m. on Monday, the manager of the Church Street MarketPlace observed Smith acting suspiciously.
He then saw Smith take a bottle of rum and exit the store without paying for it.
The manager was able to detain him and call the Police.
Smith was taken to the Hamilton Police Station where he admitted to stealing the rum.
The bottle worth $17.30 was recovered after the incident.
Magistrate Archibald Warner fined him $300.
