Lionel Bean, of Scenic Heights Drive, Southampton, pleaded guilty in Magistrates' Court yesterday to impaired driving on January 6.

Prosecutor Sgt. Phil Taylor told Magistrate Will Francis that Police officers on Scenic Heights were dealing with another matter when Bean drove up to their car and started revving up his engine.

Sgt. Taylor said the officers spoke to him about his actions and noticed he appeared to be drunk.

"Police informed him that he was under arrest on suspicion of impaired driving and Bean was cautioned but made no reply,'' Sgt. Taylor said. "The officer asked Bean several times to step out of the car, to which he refused.

He then slammed the car door when the Police tried to open it. He also locked all the doors to prevent them from getting in.

"Finally they managed to open up the doors and a struggle ensued. He was handcuffed and was asked to give a breath sample which he agreed to give at Hamilton Police Station.

"Whilst at the station he did supply two samples of breath, the lower being 199 milligrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood. He was subsequently charged, making no reply.'' Mr. Francis concluded that the 52-year-old self-employed man "had clearly not been himself'' and was fined $450 for impaired driving and disqualified from all vehicles for 12 months.
