Chin wins squash thriller
Junior Caribbean Squash Championships.
Chin was up against Eric Lopez of the Bahamas in the quarter-final of the under-19 section of the tournament, which is taking place at the Devonshire Squash Raquets Club on Middle Road.
In a rollercoaster game, Lopez was on the brink of sealing a win only for Chin to produce an outstanding fightback and clinch victory for himself.
Lopez began the tie strongly taking the first two games 9-8, 9-6 but Chin rallied and dominated the next pair, taking them 9-1, 9-3 to level the match.
In the fifth, Chin made some uncharacteristic errors and allowed Lopez to steal a march once more. The rallies were long, with Lopez generally dominating and he looked good for a win.
When Chin conceded a couple of penalty points for obstruction, Lopez was left to serve for the match but amazingly Chin recovered to 7-8 without losing his service.
Lopez's exertions appeared to be catching up with him and he dominated the game less and less. The player from the Bahamas still had a chance to take the match at 8-7, but was unable to seal victory and Chin capitalised, regaining service and levelling the tie at 8-8.
Lopez chose to play to 10 and Chin won the match, somewhat anti-climatically, on an unforced error.
The top seed in the under-17 boys section, Bermudian James Stout continued his charge with a convincing three game victory over Steven Miller of Barbados.
Earlier in the tournament there was success for local girl, Jessica Mitchell in the under-17 section.
In a hard fought battle, she saw off top seed Tracy Goodridge from Barbados.
Huge support for the Island girl appeared to urge her to victory, which she secured in the fourth game.
In the under-13 girls section fellow Bermudian Laura Robinson lost out to number two seed Chantelle Fernandez from Guyana.
Robinson provided plenty of resistance and at one point tied the game, but Fernandez proved too strong in the end.
The all-Bermudian scrap in the under-19 division saw Melissa Harney beat Clare O'Connor 3-0.
The individual tournament continues until tonight.
