Youth Adventures set to reduce anti-social conduct
College's first-ever "Youth Adventures'' programme this Friday.
Organised by College lecturer Mr. Glen Fubler, Youth Adventures is designed to "reduce anti-social conduct'' among boys aged 12 to 14 by having them participate in three of 12 scheduled activities.
Among the activities that are planned for the day are abseiling, martial arts, tennis and scuba diving.
The boys will also be treated to a free lunch.
"Youth Adventures has come about as a result of the networking of a number of individuals, organisations and businesses,'' a College statement said yesterday. "Following this first venture, there will be an assessment of its success and a close look at promoting future networking in the community.
"...If the various resources in the community would network,'' the College added, "Bermuda would be very able to address emerging social issues in a pro-active way.'' According to Mr. Fubler, Youth Adventures serves a dual purpose by channelling youthful energy into positive activities and getting people together to serve a common cause.
Referring to the rise in crime and violence lately, he added that this particular cause had social implications for Bermuda as a whole.
"The increase in anti-social conduct on the part of some of our young people has let all of society know that all is not well,'' Mr. Fubler said. "In the flurry of discussion about how to address this issue, it is clear that we will have to work together to address the underlying social issues.'' Youth Adventures, which kicks off on Friday at 8.45 a.m., is open to boys aged 12 to 14.
A maximum of 100 will be accepted.
Interested parties can pick up application forms for the programme at either the College Centre on Stonington campus or at Hamilton Library. Completed forms must be returned by 5 p.m. tomorrow. Pre-registration is mandatory.
