The man -- who is likely to require surgery -- suffered a fractured arm, hand and eye socket in the altercation, which took place at the Broken Hill Lane area, Devil's Hole.

Police were alerted to the incident after householders found the man in their yard, asking for help, at 11.59 p.m. on Monday night.

He was bleeding from wounds to his face and the back of his head, and was taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital for treatment.
