The Exchange index closed up 4.49 points to 1167.24 in trading of 23,766 shares worth $353,014.

The gain -- which saw shares close at $22.50 on volume of 6,700 -- offset declines in four other issues.

In the biggest fall of the day, Belco share dropped 62.5 cents to close at $19.875 on volume of 2352 shares while BF&M 9 percent preferred shares sank 50 cents to close at a new low of $9 on volume of 2000 shares.

BF&M also slipped 12.5 cents to close at a new low of $6.125 on volume of 500 shares while Bank of Butterfield fell 25 cents to close at $32.50 on volume of 2214 shares.

Chips Ltd. was unchanged at $6.25 on volume of 10,000 shares.
