Belboda blasts Colts into final

Champions Dandy Town were last night booted out of the Martonmere Cup by Jermaine Belboda's thunderous left-footed shot, whipped in with two minutes remaining in this semi-final at Devonshire Rec.

The clincher came after Colts had absorbed up a lot of second-half pressure and it was during a rare counter attack that Belboda, unmarked just outside of the penalty box, latched onto a pass and stunned Town with his blast from 21 yards.

However Town, whose coach Andrew Bascome was shown the red card, held territorial advantage all night and came back with a vengeance and were unlucky to equalise with a few minutes remaining.

After 89 minutes substitute Raymond Beach sliced a Cann cross wide from close range and did the same again moments later.

It was easy to understand the delight expressed on the Colts faces when it was over, perhaps they were relieved more than anything to be able to pull off a victory in a game that seemed to be out of their reach.

Skipper Shannon Burgess didn't hide his feeling and naturally attributed much to Belboda for pulling victory out of the fire. "Hats off to Jermaine, it was a great goal. It was good to get the win because Dandy Town came at us, they had a lot of people free and they put lots of pressure on us,'' said Burgess.

Coach Bascome, who was sent off the bench by referee Richard Knight after 27 minutes for arguing with game officials, had to be upset with the result after seeing his team dominate for long spells.

They fell behind after 19 minutes when Colts' skipper Burgess converted a penalty kick after Town's goalkeeper Jason Smith fouled Aljame Zuill, but the setback only inspired Town to lift their tempo.

The inevitable equaliser came after 67 minutes when Darron Simons dribbled by a defender and crossed for Cann to hammer home a fierce shot from 15 yards.

Cann and Carlos Smith followed up with two attempts before Belboda came away with the clincher for Colts.
