Hammond added to Games qualifiers
Games comes news that another Island swimmer has entered the frame for September's trip to Malaysia.
Matthew Hammond, currently studying at Deerfield Academy in Massachusetts, has dipped under the Games qualifying mark in two events on two occasions over the past couple of weeks.
At the New England championships last weekend, which attracted competitors from more than a dozen prep schools, Hammond was voted the meet's Most Valuable Swimmer by a panel of coaches after winning the 200 metre freestyle and finishing second in the 100 free.
His respective times of one minute 43.34 seconds and 47.02 were both well within the Commonwealth qualifying requirements.
Hammond had already achieved those standards a week earlier when he took on some of America's top swimmers at the US East Coast Championships which attracted entries from more than 100 schools.
The Bermudian won the 100 free consolation final in 47.14 and also made it to the final of the 200m consolation where he clocked 1:45.07.
Mullan booked her Games ticket over the weekend when she won the 400 metres individual medley in 4:40.26 at a meet in St. Louis, Missouri.
Also qualified for the Games are Bermuda's two World Championship representatives Stephen Fahy (100 free, 100 fly, 200 IM) and Stephen Troake (50 and 100 free).
Yale University student Fahy recently demonstrated impressive form when he swam a superb 1:51.07 in the 200 metres individual medley in a regional Ivy League meet -- almost seven seconds under the Games qualifying mark of 1:58.
Besides the Commonwealth Games, which begin early in September, Bermuda's swimmers are focusing on the Caribbean Island Championships in Barbados in July, this summer's Bermuda national Championships, at a date still to be set, and possibly the CAC Games in Venezuela in August.
