Senators will debate a new law designed to tighten up on pollution from some types of business.

Among the businesses affected are vehicle respraying shops, dry cleaners and commercial premises with fixed engines on site.

All will have to apply for special licences to operate if the Clean Air Amendment Act is backed by senators.

Some businesses may have to install extractor fans and other devices to reduce the amount of pollutants discharged into the atmosphere.

And the debate on the issue is set to be the only item discussed in the Upper House before the motion to adjourn.
