Golfers fall short in Cup bid

qualify for next month's World Cup in South Africa during the weekend qualifying tournament at Runaway Bay in Jamaica.

The local pair ended with a combined score of 10-over par for the 54 holes -- just three shots shy of a qualifying spot. Pearman fired rounds of 73, 70 and 70 while Swan carded 77, 80 and 72 on the par-72 course.

"I played really good, I shot three-under for three rounds,'' said Pearman yesterday.

He and Swan were up against 37 other countries from which the top 10 advanced.

"I hadn't played much golf before I left but when I got there I played steady, so I'm pleased,'' Pearman explained.

"On the first day the greens were lightning fast so we were a little timid coming off the slow greens here. On the last two days the greens were slower and I had 10 birdies.'' Dwayne Pearman
