The cycles, ranging from 50cc to 100cc, were locked up as a result of excessive noise and/or oversized engine parts during the weekend.

Police media relations spokeswoman Evelyn James Barnett said 17 bikes were impounded for having both noise levels exceeding the legal 93 decibel limit as well as oversized engines, while 15 were taken for excessive noise alone.

Mrs. James Barnett advised motorcyclists to obey the legal noise limit and encouraged parents to check their teenagers' cycles. Impounding such illegal bikes was routine for the Traffic Task Force as was nabbing speeders and dangerous drivers, she said.

Any bikes that are impounded by Police are taken to the Transport Control Department (TCD) where they are tested for excessive noise as well as oversized parts, valid licences, and insurance.

The engine and frame numbers are also checked to make sure they correspond with the vehicle's registration number.

If TCD finds a problem, the bike is returned to Police who then have the right to further impound it or confiscate the illegal parts.
