the artist's facility with line, this month's subject for Island art historian Maurine Cooper. The Fifer in this classic piece was not a young boy, but one of Manet's favourite female models. Meanwhile the lack of floorline and use of plain background further adds to the picture's overall effectiveness. Ms Cooper, a popular lecturer, will present another of her lunch-time slide shows at the Bermuda National Gallery (in Hamilton City Hall) today from 12.30 to 1.30 p.m. She will concentrate on work that ranges from ancient Egyptian tomb paintings to European masters Rembrandt, Ingres, Degas and the 20th century modernism of Pablo Picasso. Brown bag lunches are always welcome and admission is $5 at the door, (free for Gallery members).
