Altered cycle costs teenager hefty fine
Court yesterday.
Stopped three weeks after the major Police clampdown on "souped up'' cycles, teenager Daniel Caines was fined $715 and disqualified from driving for a year.
Caines, 16, of Cobbs Hill Road, Paget, was caught speeding on Parsons Road, Devonshire, by Police on Monday, December 14.
Prosecuting, Sgt. Earl Kirby said that the auxiliary cycle was travelling at 63kph, and it was also making excessive noise.
Police said that the bike had been altered. The muffler had been tampered with and the the engine was 69.8cc, making it as powerful as a motorcycle.
Caines pleaded guilty to exceeding the speed limit, being disqualified from riding a bike of that power because of his age and having a noisy bike.
As a result of tampering with the cycle Caines was fraudulently using the number plate, riding an unlicensed vehicle and riding without third party insurance.
Acting Senior Magistrate, the Wor. John Judge told Caines: "Driving any vehicle without third party insurance is very, very serious particularly in the case of a young chap like yourself.
"You are only 16 and if you are involved in an accident and happen to maim someone for life there is no way you could compensate them. You could find yourself with a financial millstone for the rest of your life.''
