Youth team slip to first defeat

Canada 201-4 Shannon Raynor scored a magnificent 95 but it wasn't enough to stop Bermuda's under-16 side slipping to the first defeat of their Canadian tour yesterday.

Raynor was run out on the last ball of the innings after sharing a second wicket stand of 103 with opener Chris Foggo, who added 50 to scores of 68 and 23 so far on the trip.

But Canada opener Ashish Bagai, who recently topped the averages in the Nortel under-19 tournament in the West Indies, smashed a brilliant 108 to steer his side to victory with seven of their 45 overs to spare.

Off break bowler Philip Thomas once more showed good control, taking 2-26.

The result leaves the tournament of four one-day matches delicately poised at one apiece, with the remaining two games to come on Thursday and Friday after today's rest day when the Bermuda squad will visit Niagara Falls.

Manager Randy Horton admitted: "The guys seemed a bit tired. They've had three consecutive days of cricket and they're not used to it. They didn't look quite as sharp in the field.

"But the talent is incredible. Once we've worked with them a bit on the tactical side, there'll be a lot of good things to come from these guys.''
