Man takes prison term over fine
yesterday for 45 days rather than pay $450 in fines.
Anthony Swan, of Rockaway Lane, appeared in Magistrates' Court and admitted driving without due care, failing to stop for Police and having no driver's licence.
In the early morning of January 9, a Police car was driving east on Middle Road in Southampton when Swan, riding a Suzuki motorcycle, was tailgating directly behind them, prosecutor Sgt. Donald Grant said.
Swan was driving with one hand on the handlebars, and throwing his other hand in the air, yelling at the Police car.
The Police car stopped but Swan continued driving until he was stopped further up the road.
When asked what he was doing, Swan replied: "I thought you guys were prison officers.'' Police officers discovered Swan had no driver's licence.
Yesterday he opted to add 45 days, in lieu of the $450 fine, on to the 300 days he is already serving for $3,000 in unpaid fines.
