Too many big trucks April 23, 2001
We have just spent three weeks in beautiful Bermuda, one of many holidays with relatives over the last 45 years.
Naturally there have been many changes over this period of time. The most noticeable on this occasion has been the significant increase in heavy container vehicles, unsuited to Bermuda. We were overtaken in a car on Harbour Road by a lorry speeding at probably 50 mph.
I would have thought with four ports -- Dockyard, Hamilton, St. George's, the US Naval Base -- plus many ferry terminals, and only 20 miles of land, that some thought should have been given to movement of heavy goods by water. If this is too late, I would recommend 25 mph governors on all heavy trucks.
There are two minor observations: (1) It is difficult to get onto Devonshire Bay Beach and work is at a halt. (2) We enjoy taking home paper napkins with the Bermuda map or flowers in the corner. We failed to find any this time -- an opportunity for someone! ROBERT J. MEARS East Sussex United Kingdom Gazette a joy to read April 30, 2001 Dear Sir, My wife and I had the pleasure of visiting your beautiful island for several days last week and we both greatly enjoyed reading your newspaper every day.
The writing by your staff was excellent and a joy to read when compared with the dry and plain writing in the newspapers here. Your writers' descriptions of events of which I have little understanding (such as cricket) were a good read nonetheless. Thank you.
