Lawyer Miss Sonia Grant and former banker and Sportseller owner Mr. Sutherland Madeiros were formally nominated for the post yesterday. The election will be held next Tuesday. Votes can be cast at City Hall between 11 a.m. and 8 p.m.

Their names were the only two put forth by the 2 p.m. deadline yesterday, Corporation Secretary Mr. Roger Sherratt confirmed.

He said that in the last two weeks 120 people had registered to vote in the election. There were now 560 voters on the electoral register.

If successful, Miss Grant would be the first woman in the position.

The former chairman of the Berkeley Institute's board of governors tried unsuccessfully in 1988 to get onto the Corporation.

One of her major concerns is how few people realised they were entitled to be on the corporation's electoral register. And she is worried by parking problems north of Hamilton.

Mr. Madeiros has also pledged to fight for better parking for shoppers and traders.

He is a strong backer of the planned multi-storey car park at Bulls Head.

He said he would also fight for improvement on other fronts, including garbage collection, lighting, and the docks.

The vacancy follows last month's election of the longest-serving Common councillor, Mr. Neville Conyers, to the post of Alderman.
