Voter registration law being drafted
the Christmas break.
The proposed change -- part of the PLP General Election platform and its first Throne Speech -- is currently being drawn up by Parliamentary draughtsmen.
Legislative Affairs Minister Lois Browne Evans said: "I hope -- if we get the legislation from the Parliamentary draughtsmen between now and when we close for Christmas -- to bring it to the House.
"If not, then in the new year -- but definitely before April, when the registration has to come out.'' The PLP platform for the election promised "the abolition of annual registration and the introduction of a system of automatic registration using existing Government computer records.'' Mrs. Browne Evans said: "The principle has been adopted and agreed by Cabinet.'' But she said the legislation was complex and required careful drafting, which could delay its introduction until next year.
