Inmate's taste of freedom short-lived
will likely face a longer jail term now, Health Minister Clarence Terceira said yesterday.
Dr. Terceira told The Royal Gazette that Maurice Burrows would appear before the Treatment of Offenders Board, which usually added time to a prisoner's sentence if they were found guilty of infringing a prison rule.
Burrows was with a work party just outside the Westgate Correctional Facility wall on Monday afternoon when he suddenly made a run for it.
The alarm was immediately sounded, said Dr. Terceira, with motor traffic heading out of Somerset being stopped at Somerset Bridge by Police officers and searched.
Meanwhile, Burrows tried to board a Government ferry but was recognised by the crew. He ran to the bus stop where he was nabbed by a waiting Prison officer.
"He was back inside in a very, very short time,'' said Dr. Terceira.
"Now the Treatment of Offenders Board will deal with him.'' Dr. Terceira said he did not want to pre-judge the Board but inmates who broke prison rules went before it and normally had time added to their sentence when they would have otherwise been out "on license''.
He added that inmates automatically had one-third of their jail sentence cut off to encourage them to behave. This additional one-third -- or part of it -- could be added back to the sentence of inmates who broke the rules.
Dr. Terceira described the incident as "a one-off situation''.
"This sort of thing does not usually happen. The prisoners who are chosen to mow the grass or do maintenance work outside the wall are usually trusted and under strict supervision.''
