BOA chiefsteps into Olympics TV row
exclusive rights to air the 1996 Summer Olympics is misleading, Bermuda Olympic Association president Austin Woods said yesterday.
BBC chief executive officer Rick Richardson said last week that his station had secured the exclusive rights to broadcast the Games in Bermuda through the Caribbean Broadcasting Union.
VSB, however, an affiliate of the American network NBC which is televising the Games, has trumpeted itself as the official Olympic station in Bermuda during their evening sports report.
"ZBM have exclusive rights for Caribbean Broadcasting Union coverage only,'' said Woods. "Let me say this from my point of view, the Olympic Association wants the Games aired on all stations or all media. I will be calling a meeting of both parties next week to put the issue to rest.'' VSB station manager Mike Bishop would not comment on the issue yesterday.
"We're really not at this point willing to discuss the matter,'' he said.
"When things are (finalised) we'll tell everyone what's going on.
"It's very delicate and complicated. I don't want to put anything on the record because there's so many issues at hand here.
"It's an issue that's never been a problem before because we weren't around when the last Olympics took place and there wasn't an NBC affiliate in the Island at that point. Now that there is, the goalposts have kind of shifted a bit and that's why we have this situation.'' Richardson did not return telephone calls yesterday.
