Cup Match dilemma for Robinson Lawrence Trott

Tonight is the deadline for club dues to be paid for those trying to make the St. George's Cup Match team. And those who don't pay will not be eligible for selection.

The St. David's youngster faces a dilemma in that he is being pursued by both Cup Match clubs in the lead-up to the summer classic which is only four weeks away.

Robinson, a former Bermuda youth team captain, was picked by Somerset in their trial match last weekend but couldn't play because of Regiment duty.

This coming Saturday he has already been named in the St. George's team for their trial match against Bailey's Bay for the Cal Wade Memorial Trophy.

"I'm still at the crossroads,'' admitted the 22-year-old Robinson, acknowledging that time was running out.

"St. George's have shown a lot of interest and I've got to make a decision by Tuesday.

Robinson played for the East Enders in the Colts Cup Match last year and scored a dashing half-century.

That knock, combined with the 70 he scored in the first trial by St. George's this season, caught both clubs' attention.

"I'm pretty comfortable with the St. George's players but I'm not sure about Somerset's.

"I was away when they (Somerset) asked about me and I got a letter from them two weeks ago.

"But I talked to Wendell Smith (St. George's selector and coach) as well. He told me to feel them out and make my decision from there.'' Because of the depth of players available at St. George's, Robinson, who was born and grew up in Warwick, realises he probably has a better chance of making the Somerset team this year.

Smith, who confirmed that because of the strength of the St. George's team he would not be bidding for a spot, admitted his club were very keen on Robinson.

"We definitely would love to have Sammy Robinson,'' said the former Cup Match captain.

"He was included in our very first trial in April so that must be a statement to him even before the season started that `we've got our eye on you'.

"He is welcome in St. George's. Competition for spots is healthy and he needs to realise that. I feel our Cup Match programme is an excellent one.'' The West Enders are searching for new talent as they bid to regain the cup they lost last year, and are certain to make changes.

Two players who played in trials at St. George's last year, Kameron Fox and Leon Place, have reportedly switched to Somerset.

Robinson admitted he "never really aspired to play Cup Match for anybody'' as a youngster.

Now he has a couple of options and has already trained twice with Somerset.

Robinson admitted it would mean more to him to help the challengers win the cup than winning with a team that already held the trophy. That statement should be encouraging to Somerset.

"With me I would like to win the cup because victory is always sweeter,'' he said. "I want it to mean something to me.'' St. George's have left out the bulk of last year's Cup Match team for Saturday's match against Bay in order to have a look at some of their other contenders.

One spot likely to be up for grabs is Jason Lewis' position. The middle-order batsman has not been able to play this season because of work commitments.

SAMMY ROBINSON -- The St. David's batsman, seen in action on Sunday driving the ball past the outstretched arm of Police captain Dennis Archer, faces a difficult decision today.
