Thief given jail term
stealing a leather jacket and a livery cycle.
Dennis Webster Warner, 47 had missed several court dates for the two unrelated incidents but was arrested last week.
Warner pleaded guilty to stealing the leather jacket, valued at $223, from Gibbons Company on February 7 last year. The jacket was never recovered.
He also pleaded guilty to stealing a cycle worth $2,000 from Smatts between November 5 and 6 last year.
Warner appeared before former Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner in February and was given a three month prison sentence, suspended for 12 months, for stealing a wallet containing cash and cheques.
However, he told Acting Senior Magistrate Edward King that the sentence was passed after he had committed the two offences for which he was now being sentenced.
He apologised to the court for taking up time and said he was sorry for committing the offences.
Mr. King said he would not activate the suspended sentence but sentenced him to six months in prison for stealing the bike, and three months in prison for stealing the jacket, to run consecutively.
Warner also asked for several outstanding fines to be added onto his sentence, and Mr. King sentenced him to 100 days in lieu of the $1,300 owed to the court.
"We weren't going to get the money anyhow,'' said Mr. King.
