Peter Bromby and crew Lee White weathered the storm and finished ninth after the first day of the Western Hemisphere Championships in Tampa, Florida,

The Bermuda sailors, competing in the Star class in an Olympic ranking regatta, were forced to contend with tumultuous seas with waves over six feet.

At least a quarter of the 40 boats involved withdrew because of gear damage and broken masts.

In fact, Bromby and White were able to capitalise on the conditions when two boats in front of them suffered substantial damage and leaped into the top 10.

"It was the first time we've had to race in conditions like that,'' said a relieved Bromby last night.

Coming off an impressive second-place finish in the Bacardi Cup earlier this month, Bromby and White got off to a slow start yesterday and were in 15th place after the first mark.

In first place was Vince Bruno of San Diego while Olympic gold medallist Mark Reynolds, also of San Diego, held onto second. Irish Olympian Mark Mansfield was third.

There will be two races today in the six-race competition. Sailors will be able to use their best five finishes.

"We're quite happy,'' said Bromby. "I just hope things calm down a bit.'' The event concludes on Friday.
