their man to fight the Paget East by-election.

Voting for the UBP primary will occur at St. Paul's Christian Education Centre in Paget between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m.

The result should be known before 8.30 p.m., said the UBP's Paget East branch chairman Mr. Campbell McBeath.

Last night the primary contenders Maritime Museum director Dr. Ed Harris and the Hon. Grant Gibbons were doing their final round of canvassing.

Sen. Gibbons said of his chances: "One has to be optimistic, although I'm not taking anything for granted.

"I would say I've had a good and positive response on the doorsteps, and have been treated very courteously.'' Sen. Gibbons said Independence had been high on people's list of concerns.

"I stressed that I'm against Independence. I don't see any advantages in it at this time.'' He added that crime and education had also been on the forefront of constituents' minds.

Dr. Harris -- whose campaign advertisements have carried the slogan: "I pledge to support your agenda -- not someone else's'' -- last night was unavailable for comment.
