The faces behind waste disposal: Dan Hoornweg: Moving from the oil fields to

Mr. Dan Hoornweg, solid waste manager, is a cardinal member of the waste management crew. He arrived in Bermuda in May of last year and is pleased by the local enthusiasm in recycling.

"The community at large seems very willing to recycle,'' he said. "And it's pleasantly encouraging.'' Mr. Hoornweg, grew up in Trenton, Ontario, Canada where he attended the local high school. Later he went to the University of Waterloo and graduated as a geo-technical engineer in 1985.

"I worked in the oil fields out west shortly after I graduated,'' said Mr.

Hoornweg. "But I thoroughly disliked it. I wanted to do something more environmental. And waste management seemed to fit the bill,'' he said.

In 1987, Mr. Hoornweg moved to the City of Guelph in Ontario to chair the waste management programme. And after three years, he applied for a job heading waste management in Bermuda.

"I thought it would be an interesting challenge,'' he said of his current position.
