All about scholarships

The Bank of Bermuda realises that students are entering exciting times when they start planning college. It is a time to learn, to grow, to experiment and to expand your horizons.

The College Search Brochure produced by the Bank of Bermuda is a valuable tool. You may collect it from the Compass Point Bank of Bermuda, third floor. One of the passages reads: "The decision you will be making is an important one and will likely affect your future in many ways. This booklet can help you in making this key decision. If you follow its directions carefully, chances are you will be happier with your decision both now and in the future."

Listed below are scholarships sponsored by the Bank of Bermuda:

Bank of Bermuda Foundation Financial Services Scholarship: It is awarded annually and you must not be less than 17 years of age as of the first day of June in the year of application.

At the discretion of the Bank, there will be one award granted each year. The purpose is to provide financial support over a period not exceeding two years to a student that is proceeding with under graduate financial services related studies on a full-time basis.

The value of the scholarship is $30,000 and is tenable at institutions of higher education approved by the Bank. The scholarship award will be determined by the Directors of the Bank of Bermuda Foundation on recommendation of the Education Sub-Committee.

Other scholarships include the Information Technology Scholarship where four awards will be granted each year. Each scholarship is for a period of four years and has a total value of $24,000.

Another is the President's Awards for Scholastic Achievement, without age restrictions, which offers six awards each year.

The value of an award is as follows: The Premier award of $10,000 and five runner-up awards of $5,000 each. The awards are offered to suitably qualified Bermudian students planning to study abroad who are in or have just completed their final year of secondary school or are in or about to graduate from the Bermuda College.

One of their most prestigious scholarships is the Sir Henry Tucker University Scholarship and Education Grants awarded annually. You cannot be less than 17 or more than 21 years of age of the first day of June in the year of application.

The scholarship has a value of $25,000 per annum for a maximum of four years tenable at a university approved by the Bank of Bermuda Foundation Education Sub-Committee. They also award up to three Education Grants having an annual value of $6999 per annum for not more than three years.

For postgraduate studies there is the Sir John W. Cox University Scholarship awarded annually. Preference will be given to graduates who have not reached their 30th birthday by the first day of July in the year of application.

Benefits are $25,000 per annum for a maximum of four years to a graduate student who is proceeding with postgraduates studies on a full-time basis at a university outside Bermuda.

Additionally there is the Eldon H. Trimingham, Master of Business Administration Scholarship awarded annually. Preference will be given to graduates who have not reached their 30th birthday by the first day of July in the year of application.

The scholarship has a value of $25,000 per annum over a period not exceeding two years to a graduate student who is proceeding with MBA studies on a full-time basis at a university outside Bermuda.
