Casino night to raise cash for new home for the mentally ill

The Bermuda Society of Interior Designers, which is overseeing the interior refurbishment of the Pembroke property that is to become Bermuda's first group residence for mentally ill adults, is planning a fund-raising dinner and casino night for this Saturday.

The new group residence, which will be operated by the Bermuda Mental Health Foundation, "should be getting its first tenants soon,'' according to Miss Christine Barritt, a member of the Foundation's executive committee.

The black-tie dinner and casino night -- the theme of which is a "Grand Voyage'' ocean cruise -- costs $75 a person to attend.

Proceeds from the event, which is to be held from 7 p.m. at Cafe Lido in Paget, will also go toward the BSID's scholarship fund for students of interior design.

Interested parties can order tickets by calling Ms Loretta Ycas at 295-5137.

*** "Beyond the Lines,'' an English exhibition of the war-time portraits of Bermudian artist Mr. Sam Morse-Brown, attracted more than 3,000 people to the Gosport Museum in Hampshire during its five-month run, the museum's curator, Mr. Ian Edelman, reported recently.

The exhibition, which inaugurated the museum's Gosport Gallery, was put on to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the ending of the Second World War.

Held from May 9 to October 14, it also prompted the Leader of Hampshire County Council, Mr. Mike Hancock, to comment: "We could not have had a better inaugural exhibition for the new gallery and we considered that it was Hampshire's honour to have Sam Morse-Brown at the exhibition's opening ceremony.'' The Hampshire County Council, Mr. Edelman stated further, had hoped to purchase 22 portraits from the exhibition for the County Musuems Service collections, but was dissuaded by the artist.

"...Unfortunately,'' the museum's curator said, "Sam felt unable to break up this collection, which is undoubtedly of importance both as works of art and as historical documents.'' *** A new "Calendar of Community Events and Meetings'' -- listing everything from local World AIDS Day observations to the times and locations of Alcoholics Anonymous meetings -- has been released by the National Drug Commission for the months of October to December.

Compiled in conjunction with a variety of the Island's agencies, the compact pink-coloured calendar will serve as a quarterly compendium of notable community events, weekly support group meetings by day of the week and other relevant information.

Anyone who is interested in obtaining a copy of the calendars, which are distributed free of charge, can do so by phoning the NDC at 292-3049.

The deadline for having an event or programme listed in the next calendar, which will cover the period of January 1 to March 31, is November 15.
