Bermuda pushes air register
promoting the Island's Aircraft Register and to take steps toward allowing people to hire out their aircraft.
The news came on Friday from Transport Minister Wayne Furbert in the House of Assembly.
He said the Department of Civil Aviation had been assessed by the UK Civil Aviation Authority and had passed with flying colours.
"We have been given a Category One rating, meaning that we fully comply with International Civil Aviation Organisation standards,'' he said.
"In view of the successful outcome of this safety assessment, I have instructed the department to double its efforts to promote the Bermuda Register of Aircraft, and to begin entertaining applications for Bermuda Air Operator's certificates.
"These certificates are issued to those who want to offer their aircraft for hire.'' The assessment -- which took place between November, 1996, and January -- covered: the state of Bermuda's aviation legislation; the qualifications of the aircraft inspectors; the organisation and management of the Department of Civil Aviation; the adequacy of its policies and procedures; the adequacy of the training given to the inspectors; and the availability of appropriate reference material.
