82 new international insurers incorporated in '96
Six new international insurers were incorporated here last month, bringing the total number of new arrivals for the year to 82, against 29 that were de-registered.
By the end of November, registered insurers had grown to 1,454, an increase of 59 over the 1,395 from a year before. Additions for the 11 months to the end of November were up by four on the 78 last year, while removals were down 11 from 40 de-registered the year before.
Nearly a third of the new companies (27) were registered under Class 3, which include reinsurers writing third party business; insurers writing direct policies with third party individuals; single parent, group, association, agency or joint venture captives where more than 20 percent of their net premiums written arises from risks which are unrelated to the business of the owners, and; finite reinsurers.
Class 1 and Class 2 combined to attract 50 percent of the new registrants, 19 and 22 companies respectively.
Class 1 companies are single parent captive insurers, while Class 2 insurers are multi-owner captives.
The most active months for registration were October (15) and September (13).
Just nine insurers were registered over those two months last year, when November saw 13 incorporated, while March and April attracted 11 registrants, each.
