Student threatens teacher with chisel

CedarBridge Academy has been plunged into further controversy after yet another incident at the trouble-plagued school.

Reports that a student at the Prospect school threatened a teacher with a chisel were leaked yesterday.

The incident allegedly took place sometime last week.

School principal Ernest Payette last night confirmed reports that there was an incident at the school involving a student and teacher.

"A student was challenged by a teacher for inappropriate behaviour,'' Mr.

Payette explained. "The student became angry and walked away.

"The teacher followed the student and spoke about the fact that the student was not behaving right,'' he added. "The student picked up a chisel while still angry.'' He said the student put the chisel down when instructed by the teacher and was escorted out of the classroom.

"No one was hurt or physically attacked,'' he insisted. "Other than the gesture of picking up the chisel, there was no threatening behaviour.'' But Mr. Payette said that under the Education Department's Code of Conduct, the act was classified as threatening behaviour.

Last night, Education Minister Jerome Dill said that he was still waiting to receive details about the incident.

But he said that threatening a teacher was a "serious'' matter and that if a criminal offence had ever taken place, the Police could be called in to investigate.
