Man is charged in attack on Canadian senator and friends
A 23-year-old Pembroke man yesterday appeared in Magistrates' Court to face 11 charges in connection with last week's attack and robbery of a Canadian Senator and his two companions.
The accused -- who cannot be named for legal reasons -- offered a one-fingered salute to a waiting throng of media and spectators as Police whisked him into a back door of the Parliament Street courthouse.
Wearing a blue "Bermuda longtail'' T-shirt and baggy pants he entered a packed Courtroom One in handcuffs and stood silently as Senior Magistrate Will Francis read out the two-page indictment.
When asked if he wished to respond to the charges the accused, who appeared without a lawyer, quietly replied "no sir''.
The offences -- which are to be tried in the Supreme Court -- stem from the August 12 attack on Nova Scotia Senator Donald Oliver and an Ottawa Ontario, couple. The incident took place at Sunshine Cottage, the Southampton home of the Senator's wife and Telco vice-president Linda Oliver.
In its indictment the Crown, represented by Crown Counsel Khamisi M. Tokunbo, allege the accused: broke into the Oliver home and stole an assortment of jewellery worth $2,150, belonging to Linda Oliver; being armed with a knife, robbed Senator Donald Oliver of C$1,400 and US$700 US, a gold chain and pendant valued at $2,000, and a golf jacket worth $70; being armed with a knife robbed an Ottawa man of $120 in cash; being armed with a knife robbed an Ottawa woman of $20 in cash; did steal by threat the property of Donald Oliver and in doing so did put him in fear that bodily harm would be caused to him; did steal by threat the property of an Ottawa woman ...; did steal by threat the property of an Ottawa man ...; did unlawfully deprive Donald Oliver of his liberty; did unlawfully deprive an Ottawa man of his liberty; did unlawfully deprive an Ottawa woman of her liberty; while armed with a knife did commit a serious sexual assault on an Ottawa woman.
At the request of the Crown the accused was remanded in custody until August 30, when he appears in court for mention.
