Bioferm Compost Systems International has applied for planning permission to build a biofermenter composting facility -- or compost making centre.

Yesterday no-one from the New Hampshire-based Bioferm was available for comment, but it is understood the centre is being planned for the old Naval Air Station.

Preliminary talks have taken place with the Bermuda Land Development Company about setting up the business near the old dump, opposite Clearwater Beach -- although nothing has been signed.

Bioferm has also applied for an operating licence under the Clean Air Act, although it withdrew the application to make some amendments.

It is believed that Bioferm officials have been on the Island several times in the last couple of years scouting for possible sites, but have now settled on the NAS where it could make use of existing buildings.

The technique used to create the compost is organic and environmentally friendly and can produce compost in two weeks.
