Mello tops field in Canadian tourney

Friday's Whirlpool junior golf tournament as he beat Southern Ontario's top 15-year-old Peter Laws to win the Willow-Dell tournament in Canada on Sunday.

Mello shot a final round of par 72 to win by three strokes over Laws while another Bermudian, Eric West, carded a fine 74 to finish third ahead of the Whirlpool winner David Poirier of Thunder Bay. Yet another Bermudian, Colin Brown, was fifth.

Mello, who had played outstanding golf all week, has earned an invitation to the Canadian Junior Championships later this month where he will be joined by three other promising juniors, Aaron James, Chris Smith and Fraser Hunt.

In the boys 16-18 group, Chris Smith couldn't capitalise on his first round 74 which gave him a one-stroke lead. His final round of 80 left him with a creditable third place.

In the girls' division, Jennifer Spurling gave her Bermudian supporters much to cheer about before finally coming up an inch short on the 18th green. She needed to sink a six-footer to get into a sudden death play-off but had to settle for second place when her putt failed to make the hole by less than an inch.

It marked Spurling's second runner-up finish for the week.

The Canadian tour for the Bermudian juniors ended with all the players returning home yesterday.
