Canadians, Americans set to fly in for national championships
Some 15 swimmers from Canada and the US will fly in for next month's Bermuda National Championships during which locals will be given their last chance to qualify for August's Commonwealth Games in Victoria.
Bermuda Amateur Swimming Association hope the overseas competitors will raise the standard of the meet, scheduled for June 17, 18 and 19 at the BASA pool.
The meet will also serve as a final qualifier for those hoping to compete at the Caribbean Age Group championships in Kingston, Jamaica in July.
Fifteen local swimmers have already qualified for that event, the latest being 10-year-old Jonathan Herring of Sharks Swim Club.
At Saturday's second Spring Series meet, Herring posted AA times in both the 50 and 100 metres freestyle.
The meet, which attracted 110 swimmers, also saw 16-year-old Stephen Fahy and 14-year-old Craig Ferguson reach AA standards in each of the three events they entered.
Ferguson's personal best time of 1.00.07 in the 100m freestyle was one of the day's highlights. He also swam in the 200m freestyle and 200m.
breaststroke, while Fahy reached the AA standard in the 100m and 200m butterfly and the 200m freestyle.
Meanwhile, two Harbour Club members qualified for the National Swimming Squad when they attained A times in the 10 and under age group.
Travis Tucker made his mark in the 50m backstroke while Ben Dier reached the standard in the 50m freestyle.
