Don't ruin tourism July 30, 1999
My family just spent one week on your beautiful island. This is my third visit, the last being in 1996. Please don't get me wrong, we had a wonderful time, but I have noticed a couple of changes. As was noted in the paper last week, I see signs of future problems.
I think the Island is dirtier than before -- I saw garbage all over the streets. What did bother me the most was the amount of public drinking I saw.
We waited in St. George's for the bus one evening -- never again. The bus stop was right next to the liquor store -- a poor choice. My family was very intimidated by the people who were obviously drunk. This was one block away from the Police Station -- no officer appeared. One officer did walk by and made a joke to one of the men and just kept on walking -- never to return.
I am sure to return to Bermuda, but I will choose where I go a little better.
Tourism is your business don't ruin a wonderful, wonderful thing you have going for yourselves.
