Hubbard shines in Toulouse tour

Tour De Tarn et Garone in Toulouse, France on the weekend, finishing 19th overall among some 90 finishers.

The white jersey was awarded for best under-21 rider while he was also awarded the grey jersey as the "most elegant rider'' over the four stages.

Some 110 riders began the four-day event last Thursday, starting with a 130 kilometre road race over a fairly flat course. A 150km road race over a mountainous course followed on the second day.

Stage three was a 100km criterium around a small circuit before the event climaxed with a pack sprint finish to the 90km road race, the competitors having averaged 42 kph for the four days.

Hubbard took possession of the white jersey after the first stage when he was 12th overall, only to lose it on the second stage when he was third among the under 21 riders and 19th overall.

His third overall placing on the third stage enabled him to win back the white jersey and he held it on the fourth stage when he was also awarded the grey jersey, having impressed the officials with his technique.

Hubbard was competing with five other teammates, finishing second for his team, with another rider placing 12th overall. Another teammate was third in the third stage, the best stage finish for the Mimosa Sprint Mandelieu team.

"I put in a pretty good showing,'' 20-year-old Hubbard said last night from his home in the village of Mandelieu.

"It was a pretty tough race. I had some trouble on the flat stages -- I prefer the mountains -- but I managed to hang in with the lead group.

"I'm pleased to have made a name for myself as the best young rider.'' The event was the first for Hubbard since he was recently confirmed as a member of Bermuda's Commonwealth Games team for the trip to British Columbia in August.

He admits he is trying to peak just in time for the Games. "I had a peak about a month ago and there were two weeks when I had a bit of trouble before the third place in Italy,'' said Hubbard.

"I'm fairly experienced and I have a pretty good idea what I need to do to be in shape for the event.'' ELLIOTT HUBBARD -- winner of two jerseys in four-stage tour.
