Man stole to support his drug habit
cash and jewellery to support a drug habit is awaiting sentencing.
Shayne Dwayne Dillas, of Smith's Hill, pleaded guilty in Magistrates' Court yesterday to three separate incidents of theft, breaking and entering.
Crown counsel Leighton Rochester said Dillas broke and entered the residence of Bishop Isaiah Johnson on November 29 by putting a ladder to the upper window.
When Dillas was confronted by an unidentified person, he claimed he was doing some work in the house.
When Bishop Johnson returned home, he discovered two closet doors had been broken and a number of items stolen, including two watches and a Sony video camera valued at approximately $1,170.
In a separate incident, Dillas broke into the residence of Gary Hart at Inland Lane in Pembroke.
When Mr. Hart returned home from work on December 7 he noticed tool marks on the frame of his door and realised his home had been broken into.
A set of keys and gold jewellery valued at approximately $229.90 had been stolen.
Later the same day, Mr. Hart's neighbour Carol Hetherington returned home to discover approximately $2,000 in cash had been stolen from her house.
Police found Dillas on December 8 at the Ducking Stool. He was searched and Mr. Hart's house keys were found on him.
Under questioning, Dillas admitted to the crimes. He told Police that he spent the money on drugs and gave away the video camera and jewellery.
Yesterday duty counsel Oona Goodred asked that two similar offences be taken into consideration.
And she said Dillas claimed he had done work for both Bishop Johnson and the landlord of Mr. Hart and Ms Hetherington -- and had never been paid.
Dillas admitted he had made a mistake and promised to reimburse the complainants by tomorrow.
Acting Magistrate Justin Williams delayed sentencing until Wednesday and ordered that Dillas be bailed for $3,000 with one like surety.
