All-Star Classic scrapped by BFA
showcases involving basketball, hockey and American football, Bermudians have been denied any such opportunity for the 2000-2001 soccer season.
It has been confirmed that the Bermuda Football Association will not be staging the All-Star Classic, which has in the past featured three matches -- senior men, under-21 and women -- that pitted select squads representing East and West.
A combination of financial and scheduling problems were cited as reasons for the decision to eliminate the event, but it is expected to be reinstituted for the 2001-2002 campaign.
"We decided to scrap the game this year for a number of reasons, in that; one, we go back to the drawing board and look at ways that we can better produce it, because numbers have dropped off over the last year and; two, the problems we've been having with the schedule, with regards to referees and what not, means that we don't have the extra weeks to be putting in extra games,'' explained competitions chairman Craig Tyrrell.
"It's not something that is dead, rather that we just will not be doing it this year.'' Devonshire Colts will be hot favourites to book their place in the last four of the FA Cup when they take on Southampton Rangers tonight in the quarter-finals at Devonshire Rec. (7 p.m.).
Rangers are bottom of the Premier Division table, while Colts are equal on points with leaders Dandy Town.
In the second quarter-final, top-flight PHC will take the First Division's bottom team, Social Club (9 p.m.).
