recognition of their traditional Bermudian architecture.

The private Harbour Road residence "Cloud Hill'', renovated by architect Malcolm Sutherland of Barker & Linberg and owned by Hakan and Eva Castegren, scooped up first prize in the residential category of the fourth annual Bermuda Building Design Awards.

Sponsored by Bermuda Commercial Bank and the Bermudian magazine, organisers of the awards credited the works of architects, developers and homeowners throughout the Island.

"This interesting Edwardian house has been upgraded to the highest specifications, resulting in a home of tranquil beauty,'' art historian and judge Sylvia Shorto said of "Cloud Hill''.

The Tucker's Town home "But'n'Ben'', owned by James and Judith Luttit, received honourable mention after being renovated by local architects David and Georgia Benevides as well as developer Gary Lamb.

Bermuda Realty Limited sales manager and judge Drew Horsefield said the property "parodies the cottage style''.

Architect John Watson and developers James Tucker and Ed Pereira were also praised for the restoration of the old Garrison Station Hospital in Devonshire.

The winner in the public and commercial buildings category was the Holy Trinity Church hall which was designed by architect Stephen West.

The judges described the finished hall as being "as harmonious as one could expect''.

Honourable mentions were awarded to the architects of Barker & Linberg for their renovations to East Broadway's Renaissance House and Pembroke's Sticks & Stones building.

A panel of five judges chose the awardees from a total of 19 newly-renovated properties, basing their decisions on such things as innovation and practicality.
