Customs and Works staff are likely to move to St. David's
Government workers from Customs, Works & Engineering and Computer Services may be among those moved to the US Naval Air Station once the Americans leave.
And the Archives have requested storage space at the St. David's Base.
"We are looking at a number of different ministries and departments,'' said Management and Technology Minister the Hon. Grant Gibbons, the main Cabinet Minister responsible for the Bases. "Some would have better reason to be down there than others.'' Government is looking at moving public servants to the Base so that buildings there continue to be used until permanent tenants are found. Unless buildings are occupied, they often deteriorate and systems like water and sewage stop working.
Departments which must be accessible to the public -- like social services and Planning -- must remain in Hamilton and cannot be moved to St. David's.
Management Services is studying moves of Government offices and is expected to submit a report in March. It has already surveyed departments about their space requirements and interviews with Permanent Secretaries and department heads are expected in the weeks ahead.
Dr. Gibbons would only confirm that Archives have asked for space at the Base.
While no decisions have been made, parts of Customs and Works & Engineering operations, as well as parts of Computer Systems & Services are believed to be among departments in line for a possible move.
