others in the net division during yesterday's opening day of the 41st Bermuda Goodwill Tournament.

The popular pre-Christmas tournament, which will see the 100 teams playing on all four courses -- Belmont, Castle Harbour, Mid Ocean and Port Royal -- has Agawam Hunt Club, Capital City Country Club and Waccabuc Country Club as the early leaders following their rounds at Belmont yesterday.

Agawam, from East Providence, Rhode Island, are led by pro Paul Butler while Capital City of Atlanta have John Fesperman as their pro. John McPhee is the pro at New Jersey-based Waccabuc.

Five of the top seven scores came from Belmont as Charles River Country Club and Winchester Country Club both carded 60s. Two other teams, Castle Harbour on their home course and Overbrook Golf Club at Port Royal, also shot 60s to put themselves amongst the early leaders.

Eight other teams are a further stroke back on 61, five from Belmont, two from Mid Ocean and the other from Port Royal.

Local team Belmont, led by Cornell Bean, are in the hunt for the net prize following their 62 at Mid Ocean, which leaves them four strokes off the pace.

Dwayne Pearman is making his debut in this tournament, leading Ocean View who shot a 65 at Mid Ocean.

In the gross division, three teams lead on 63 -- Charles River, Willow Bend and Winchester -- with Agawam Hunt Club and Capital City both a further stroke back on 64.

Tomorrow, the professionals will battle at Port Royal for some $16,000 in prize money, $10,500 to the juniors and $5,500 to the seniors.

There is a top prize in the juniors of $2,500 while the top senior will get $1,500 for his day's work. The second round of the Goodwill is today and will resume on Thursday and Friday. Today also sees the women playing at St.

George's Golf Club.
