Night game ban counter-productive says BFA chief

played on their grounds would be "counter productive'', according to Bermuda Football Association president Neville Tyrrell.

While no moves have yet been made in that direction, Tyrrell was yesterday responding to a suggestion that a night soccer ban could be enforced by field operators if they felt measures had to be taken as a result of last Tuesday night's fan violence at Somerset which resulted in a Police officer being stabbed.

"It would be a counter productive decision if they made it,'' said Tyrrell.

"Obviously they would have to make a decision which they believed was in their own best interests. We have night games in order to make additional revenue, but if the measure had to be taken, I personally would have to support it.'' While Somerset CC president Reginald Pearman yesterday dismissed rumours that his club had already informed the BFA that they would be refusing to allow night matches at their ground for the rest of the season, he did hint that field operators would soon be meeting to discuss the "whole issue''.

Pearman, who was overseas when last week's melee occurred, said: "I don't know anything about Somerset approaching the BFA. But I was shocked that the incident occurred on our ground. The whole thing leaves a lot to be desired, there are a lot of other things involved.

"I really think all of the club operators will get together, I really think they should. But the truth of the matter is that I haven't had a chance to assess things with my committee yet.'' Tyrrell admitted that a meeting by field operators to discuss the recent incident could be beneficial and could help soccer in the long run.

"I haven't heard there are clubs who are against having night matches as a result of the incident, but I wouldn't be surprised if something of this nature was an outcome,'' he said.

I am all for it, especially when they take the initiative to see if there is anything that they can come up with. We would hopefully support them all of the way.'' Tyrrell pointed to the limited resources of clubs and field operators and said most recognised the difficulty they would have in policing their grounds to the extent that everybody could be carefully supervised.

"I would be prepared to talk with the Sports Minister who seems, when these things happen, to be agreeable to side-tracking money to finance these sort of things,'' added Tyrrell. "And if they (the clubs) are able to put a plan together, I am prepared to assist them with any talks with the minister.'' Should clubs give night soccer the thumbs down, Tyrrell admitted it would be a huge strain on the BFA's schedule.

"If it came to the field operators not wanting any further night games then obviously we would have to look at it closer from an administrative point of view.''
