Anniversary a happy event for long-serving employees

the Reefs, it shows. Known as `Scotty' around the Southampton premises, he began working there 37 years ago. "For me, the anniversary is a happy occasion,'' he said. "I started back on March 3, 1960 as beach manager. I know that 65 to 70 percent of our guests are repeat trade, so I've gotten to know quite a few people. It helps that I have a good memory and over the years I've found that people love the fact that there's someone walking out and greeting them by name. But if you like people, it's very easy.'' The good feeling at the Reefs, he explained, exists because of the personalities of the people who work there. "The Reefs is one place where they don't fire people; they either fit in with us or they feel odd. So it's up to you. Those who are not the Reefs type of people don't stay very long. They feel out of place.'' Mr. Scott said he even remembers specific details about guests -- what they eat, what they like to drink. "A lot of guests measure way back, 30 years or so and there's a lot of people who come in and say, "We remember you, we spent our honeymoon here 30 years ago.' I have a great time with them. The atmosphere for guests and also for the staff, is great at the Reefs; especially in my area because it's less formal than in the main club. So we have a lot of laughs. I've been there for 37 years so I've gotten to meet the mothers and fathers first and now I'm meeting the kids. "There is one family that has four generations that have been here and there are others who come down here as kids and now come down with their spouses. Now, they only have to come down and have me hear them before we start talking. Sometimes I put so much time there, I tend to think it's my home.''
